Yesterday we celebrated two Eurovision birthday stars, Laura and Flash. Today we add one more, thus bringing you three excuses to pop the cava (or PepsiMax!)! We have two birthday girls and one birthday boy for you to celebrate. One of them *almost* won the contest for their country in the country’s debut year, while another told us she’d be here for us. We give you Maraaya’s Marjetka, who turns 34 today!
Amila Glamočak, 52
Amila Glamočak represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo. She performed the song “Za našu ljubav”, finishing in a very disappointing 22nd place out of 23 participating countries. This was the weakest result of the Balkan country until their first non-qualification in 2016. Amila also tried to represent her country twice after this; in 2001 and 2003.
Kaspars Roga, 44
Kaspars Roga represented Latvia at the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm. This was Latvia’s debut year, and they very nearly won it in their first attempt. And they should have! (Yes, getting personal again. And proud of it!) Brit pop/rock band Brainstorm performed their brilliant entry “My Star”, earning 136 points, thus finishing in third place on the big night. Kaspars is the drummer, and he is also the man behind many of the band’s videos.
Marjetka Vovk (Maraaya), 34
Marjetka Vovk represented Slovenia at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. She did so as half of the duo Maraaya. The other half of the duo is her husband Aleš (Raayem). They competed in the second semi-final, where they finished fifth, and thus sailed into the grand final. On the Saturday night they ended up close to the middle of the scoreboard, by finishing 14th.
