Junior Eurovision 2022: Our Top 10 (10 to 7)

Another year, another Junior Eurovision top 10! The team here at ESCXTRA have scored all 16 of the Junior Eurovision 2022 entries and we’ll be counting down our top 10 along with a selection of reviews. Has your favourite made the top spot? Let’s find out!

Last year we revealed our top 10 of all the 19 entries at the 2021 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Previous winners of our votes have included:

Today we reveal our numbers 10 to 7, with later reveals coming soon!

10 – 🇲🇰 North Macedonia: Lara ft. Jovan & Irina – “Životot E Pred Mene”

Sean 🇺🇸

I’m gonna be honest, I am lowkey the reason why this song made the top 10. And I get it. This is a song that is probably for me and me alone. But this song is probably the catchiest of the entire field this year. It has a lot of the Junior Eurovision cliches that I love, but that also make this song dead on arrival. But I don’t really care.

Isabella 🇦🇺

Životot E Pred Mene is a fun song that Lara, Jovan & Irina sell very well. It is also very accessible to a wide audience that everyone will find fun to clap and sing along to. For me, it could benefit from more variety, as the song itself is quite repetitive throughout. In saying this, the interactions between the three during the song will clearly have a greater effect on stage than the studio version so I’m curious to see how this translates in their live performance.

09 – 🇫🇷 France: Lissandro – “Oh Maman!”

Sean 🇺🇸

France is quickly becoming a country that has a formula for JESC and treats it as gospel. And to be fair, it’s worked well enough for them so far. However, I feel like this is trying too hard to fit the bill. Technically, there’s nothing wrong with it. Lissandro is clearly a star and performs the bejeezus out of this song. The song itself is slick and has no glaring drawbacks. It just doesn’t have that x-factor to make this a winner. Too much polish, not enough substance.

Isabella 🇦🇺

Lissandro is one of the most charismatic young performers I’ve seen in a long time, as even without watching the music video, you can hear his happinness through the way he enunciates the words of the song and varies his vocal range and style. Whilst ‘Oh Maman!’ does have features of songs we’ve heard before, it is still a very fun song that has the potential to be even more powerful on stage with an electrifying live performance, which Lissandro can definitely pull off with his infectious charisma.

08 – 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan: David Charlin – “Jer-Ana”

Micheál 🇮🇪

Kazakhstan are quickly becoming a powerhouse at JESC. They always send something so polished and well-produced so I am very excited to see what they do on stage. David Charlin has got a big song to sing and I have no fear that he will pull it off!

Isabella 🇦🇺

Kazakhstan is once again showing that they deserve a place in the adult contest as Jer-Ana is a very well produced song. Despite his young age, David Charlin also has a very mature and powerful tonality to his voice, and is able to evoke his emotions very effectively about protecting Jer-Ana, Mother Earth. I’m excited to see what they do with the staging, as they have the potential to elevate the song even further with stunning visuals.

07 – 🇮🇹 Italy: Chanel Dilecta – “BLA BLA BLA”

Lisa 🇬🇧

This is a surprising entry on many levels. Not least because I’m so used to ballads and bizarre duets from Italy. However despite the surface level frivolous fun and a hook that instantly gets stuck in your head, the lyrics beneath that provide meaningful depth that we all should be enjoying life away from social media.

Isabella 🇦🇺

‘BLA BLA BLA’ is a solid and polished entry from Italy, and Chanel is a talented and charismatic performer who sells the message of the song very effectively. Whilst I was left wanting a little bit more from the song when it ended, I really believe that the song will be brought to life on stage as it has great potential. I’m curious to see whether they recreate the music video or bring something unique to Yerevan, as the song itself has a chorus that has very accessible dance-moves and is easy to sing along to.
