RTVSLO awaiting new programme plan to confirm Slovenia’s Eurovision 2019 participation

Lea Sirk gave Slovenia their first qualification since 2015 in Lisbon

Slovene broadcaster RTVSLO has confirmed to ESCXTRA.com that they have yet to submit an application to participate in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. As is the normal process at RTVSLO, they must await the following year’s programme production plan to be unveiled prior to being able to confirm Slovenia’s participation in the forthcoming contest.

“No application yet”

With the deadline for broadcasters to provisionally apply for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest slowly approaching, and no announcement from RTVSLO regarding Slovenia’s continued participation, ESCXTRA.com contacted the broadcaster for an update. We thank them for their swift reply to our questions and RTVSLO gave the following explanation to us:

RTV Slovenia confirms its participation in the ESC and similar projects of the EBU only after the program-production plan for the year in which the competition is running is adopted.  The plan has not yet been adopted, and no application has yet been made.

Defending their Choir of the Year crown?

Therefore, Slovenia’s lack of announcement thus far should not worry Eurovision fans. It is part of RTVSLO’s programming strategy to await for the new year’s programme production plan prior to confirming their participation in Eurovision events. This also explains why Slovenia have yet to announce their participation in Eurovision Choir of the Year 2019. Slovenia won the first edition of the event last year courtesy of the choir Carmen Manet. Official announcements should be expected in the coming months.

Yes, please!

Lea Sirk may have sung Hvala, ne! (No, thank you!) for Slovenia in Lisbon, but the Eurovision audience certainly said yes, please! to Lea and awarded Slovenia a place in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 grand final in Lisbon. Slovenia placed eighth in the second semi-final, giving the nation its first qualification since Maraaya in 2015. It was also only Slovenia’s fifth qualification since the semi-finals were introduced 15 contests ago. In the grand final, Lea finishing in 22nd place scoring 64 points.
