With Italy joining the Eurovision 2021 squad, we can expect at least 38 delegations to be present in Rotterdam next year. The Italians haven’t revealed anything about whether they allow Diodato to return or to use Festival di Sanremo again, and will reveal this at a later date. Since their return in 2011, they have used this show to choose the Italian representative for Eurovision, except for 2014.

The remaining silent countries have only a short time left to confirm their participation or to withdraw. The deadline is set on 10 October 2020.

Italy’s Eurovision history

Italy started its Eurovision journey in the very beginning alongsides six other countries. They had the honour to participate in the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. As there was only a winner’s announcement, we don’t know where Italy finished back then. The Italians have always counted on their beloved Festival di Sanremo to find a suitable representative to send to the contest. Through the decades, hey have often spoiled us with great masterpieces by artists such as Domenico Modugno, Albano, Romina Power, Franco Batiatto, Umberto Tozzi, Matia Bazar, Marco Mengoni, Il Volo, Francesco Gabbani, Raphael Gualazzi, Massimo Ranieri, Ricardo Fogli… So far the country managed to win the contest twice. One time in 1964 with Gigliola Cinquetti and “Non Ho L’Eta” and a second time in 1990 with Toto Cotugno and ‘Insieme: 1992″.
