Florian Wieder reportedly selected as stage designer

German born designer has five Eurovision stages under his belt

KAN have reportedly selected Florian Wieder as the set designer for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest, according to Israeli tabloid Walla

Weider’s portfolio includes five previous Eurovision stage designs

Florian Wieder is no stranger to the Eurovision Song Contest. The German designer has previously constructed stages for the the 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2018 event. In 2015, he spoke of the main challenge he faced in building a stage fit for the contest.

The challenge with the Eurovision Song Contest is the size of this production. And not only the physical size of it but also the 39 participating nations who all expect to have their act staged in the best possible way

Besides Eurovision, Wieder holds an impressive portfolio with years of experience. His previous work includes set designs for American Idol, MTV Europe Music Awards, MTV Movie Awards and The Voice Germany.  He is currently working as Production Designer on the present season of The X Factor UK

‘National pride should be considered’ claims fellow candidate

According to Walla, Israeli designers Maya Hanoch and partner Avi Fahima were close to being chosen for the role.  The pair expressed their upset at the decision, after initially receiving positive comments on their design.

“We are very disappointed by this decision.  They told us that the two designs were excellent. We did a spectacular stage design for Eurovision. Eurovision is happening in Tel Aviv and should be shaped by the Israelis.

Aiming for a ‘perfect’ Eurovision stage

In September, we reported that KAN were keen to build the perfect stage for Eurovision. This was followed by a month long submission period, with the broadcaster open to international involvement.
