The next artist to rehearse is Julia Samoylova for Russia. We have just watched their first run through of I Won’t Break live on screen and here is our initial reaction.

Staging

Julia is performing from the top of a white mountain which is around two and a half metres tall. The camera begins on Julia who is lit up whilst the mountain remains dark. Just before the first chorus begins, one male and one female dancer emerge to perform some interpretative choreography.
From the second chorus, there are projections onto the mountain and the floor that immediately surrounds her, creating a dark and icy feeling. However, for the final chorus, her dancers move onto the outer ring of the stage as the lighting changes to gold colours with Julia and her three backing vocalists still visible on the main stage at the back of the camera shot.

Vocals

Julia’s vocals have improved in comparison to her Moscow Eurovision Party performance, although still tends to struggle in the first two choruses. The addition of the live backing vocalists adds a lot of power and confidence to the overall vocal delivery.

Costumes

Julia is wearing a white and purple dress to blend in with the white mountain prop. She has some glittery make-up on, which adds to the wintery and icy atmosphere on stage. Her male dancer is wearing only white trousers with the female dancer in a small white dress.
