Tel Aviv 2019

Israel’s “The Next Star” to start on 24 November

We’ve seen Nadav, Hovi, Imri and Netta all win from this selection. And now it’s time to find Israel’s next star for Eurovision, starting this Saturday.

5th year running

HaKokhav HaBa L’Eurovizion (The Next Star for the Eurovision) returns for a 5th year this week in order to decide who will represent Israel on home soil. Auditions began on 28 June in Tel Aviv and concluded just over a month later in Or Akiva. Moreover, various well known names are expected to compete this year. The Voice Season Three winner Elkana Marziano and runner-up Tamar Amar are among those rumoured. We may also expect to see Eti Bitton, Maya Buskila and Roey Sandler.

A new addition

In August, it was announced that Shiri Maimon will become a judge for this selection. Shiri represented Israel back in 2005, finishing fourth with the song “HaSheket SheNish’ar” (“The Silence That Remains”). She joins fellow Eurovision participant Harel Skaat, alongside duo Static and Ben El Tavori, Asaf Amdursky and Keren Peles.

Furthermore, additional shows have been confirmed for this year’s selection. “Khortis Acharon Ligmor” (Last Final Ticket) gives contestants a second chance after the semi final in a bid to get them through to the final. Once the winner of The Next Star has been decided, there will be an extra three shows broadcasted to decide on the song that the winner will perform at Eurovision 2019.

Israel in Eurovision

Israel made their debut in 1973 and have won four times. Their first two victories came consecutively in 1978 and 1979. 20 years on from winning for the first time, Dana International won in Birmingham with her song “Diva”. Most recently, Netta won this year in Lisbon with her song “Toy”, bringing Eurovision to Tel Aviv next year.
