An Xtra Happy Birthday; 11 June

Greetings to Norway, Turkey, Finland, the Netherlands, Czechia, Israel and Belarus!

Yesterday we celebrated two wonderful young Eurovision stars on their birthday. Today we multiply that by three and add one, and bring you no less than seven Eurovision birthday stars to congratulate! They are from just about all corners of the continent, and their results at Eurovision are also all over the place! The best result came in 2007, when Dimitry Koldun finished 6th!

Linda Williams, 63

Linda Williams represented the Netherlands at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin. She performed the song “Het is een wonder”, finishing in 9th place. Linda returned to the Eurovision stage 18 years later, as a backing singer for Vanessa Chinitor, representing Belgium

Ota Váňa, 47

Ota Váňa represented the Czech Republic at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. He did so as part of the rock band Kabát. They performed the song “Malá Dáma”, as the first Czech entry in the contest. They finished dead last in the semi-final, receiving just one point (from Estonia), thus failing to qualify for the grand final.

Mira Awad, 43

Mira Awad represented Israel at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. She did so alongside Noa, performing the song “There Must Be Another Way”. Mira was the first Arab Israeli to represent Israel at Eurovision, and the song was the first Israeli entry that had parts of its lyrics in Arabic. They finished seventh in the first semi-final, thus earning a place in the grand final. There they finished in 16th place. Mira also took part in the Israeli pre-selection in 2005, where she finished eight with her song “Zman“.

Ozan Musluoglu, 41

Ozan represented Turkey at the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest on homeground in Istanbul. He did so as part of ska-punk band Athena. They performed the song “For Real”, finishing in a very respectable and well deserved fourth place.

Dimitry Koldun, 33

Dimitry Koldun, best known as just Koldun, represented Belarus at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. In what is known as the hardest ever semi-final, Koldun finished 4th, thus sailing through to the grand final. On the Saturday night, he performed his song “Work Your Magic” again, finishing in sixth place.

Didrik Solli-Tangen, 31

Norway picked Didrik to be their representative at Eurovision in 2010. Therefore he sang “My Heart Is Yours” at final in Oslo, Norway. At the end of the show, Solli-Tangen had got 35 point, that is he ended in 20th place out of 25 acts.

Pernilla Karlsson, 28

Pernilla represented Finland in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, with the song “När jag blundar”. This was only the second time the Finnish entry was performed in Swedish. The first time was “Fri?” back in 1990, which was, coincidentally the year Pernilla was born! Unfortunately Pernilla and “När jag blundar” only finished 12th in the first semi final, thus failing to qualify for the grand final.

All of us here at escXtra wish every single of today’s seven Eurovision birthday stars the very happiest of birthdays!
